Chocolate Covered Strawberries

Chocolate Covered Strawberries

Valentine’s Day is coming up and I know what I want……anything chocolate!!! Chocolate covered strawberries are one of my favorite V-day treats, but the price tag in stores is highly overrated. No thanks! Lucky for you (and me!) they are SO easy to make. Like ridiculously easy. Like I promise you’ll never buy them again! They are the perfect Valentines Day gift to give or to receive and making them yourself just makes them that much more special. I absolutely adore homemade gifts! It really is the thought that matters most. I love indulging in this swoon-worthy treat so much that I think I might just keep a batch for myself this year and you should too. Treat yo self!

Here’s all you’ll need: strawberries, chocolate wafers, candy melts and sprinkles for decorating. We live right down the street from a chocolate shop called Candymakers that sells chocolate making supplies so that’s where I bought my chocolate from. You could also use Baker’s Baking Chocolate bars found in the baking aisle or even a few Hershey’s chocolate bars in a pinch.Chocolate Covered Strawberries Ingredients List

Start by rinsing the strawberries.

Ok now here is THE most important part of this whole tutorial. Drain the strawberries and dry completely. Chocolate and water are the world’s worst enemies!! So after I drain the strawberries I also give them a little bit of a towel dry. One drop of water will ruin a whole batch of chocolate. Get the hair dryer if you need to! Ok so maybe that’s a little too far but be 100% sure that they’re dry.

Strawberry drying on paper towel.

I like to lay down some parchment or wax paper so we have a nice surface to work on. I tape it right to the countertop so it can’t move. Next fill a microwave safe mug right to the top with chocolate wafers. I love using mugs because they’re deep enough to dunk and you don’t need to use as much chocolate as it would take to fill a bowl. And typically all my bowls are dirty but all my mugs are not! Microwave for 30 seconds and then stir with a spoon. Continue to microwave in 30 second intervals, stirring in between, until all the chocolate is melted. It should look smooth and creamy like this! If you’re using white chocolate I would use the same process but in 15 second intervals. White chocolate is super easy to scorch. (you know it’s scorched if it’s thick and clumpy and it can’t be fixed or re melted….bummer)

Hold the strawberry by the stem so that all the leaves are out of the way. Dunk the strawberry into the chocolate until fully submerged. Shake off any excess chocolate.

Place the strawberry on the parchment paper to dry. Allow chocolate to harden, this will take a few minutes. If you plan to decorate with sprinkles, you’ll want to do that right away before the chocolate has a chance to set up. I dipped a few in sprinkles immediately after their little chocolate bath and I love how they turned out!

Now it’s time to get a little bit fancy! Place a small amount of candy melts in a zip loc bag. Microwave in 30 second intervals until the candy is melted. You don’t have to stir it with a spoon, you can just squish the bag with your fingers between intervals. I found these pink candy melts at Walmart. They’re Rosana Pansino’s of Nerdy Nummies new line and I was so excited to try them! They’re even strawberry flavored, which is perfect for making chocolate covered strawberries.

Cut a small slit in the corner of the bag. Slowly squeeze the candy melts out of the bag. Drizzle it across the chocolate covered strawberries in a back and forth motion. You can’t mess this up I promise. Go straight, go diagonal, criss cross, it’ll turn out beautifully no matter what. Allow the candy melts to harden before touching them. Hands off til they’re dry! They are best served same day but leftovers (like there will be any) can be kept in the fridge for a few days.

How pretty!!! I can’t decide which is my favorite. Ok then it’s settled, I’ll have one of each!! Will you be making Chocolate Covered Strawberries for anyone special this year? If strawberries and chocolate are your thang, then you’ve gotta try our Fresh Strawberry Tart ASAP!!!
