I’ve got a thrifty little birthday craft for you!! I busted out my savvy shopping skills and headed on over to the Dollar Tree for this one. Can you believe these vibrant milkshake glasses were only a dollar a piece??? I couldn’t! They had all sorts of bright colors too! I stopped in at Michaels and picked up this foam ball for just $3 and I already had the straws on hand. If that weren’t enough of a bargain, the taffy was on sale too, which meant I was able to make not one but 2 of these fabulous milkshakes for right around $10. The taffy colors were all mixed together in the bulk section at my local grocer so I had to pick out all the pink ones by hand! My apologies to anyone that was trying to buy pink taffy in Buffalo in July! I took it ALL!! But it was for a good cause. Pink is my niece Ellie’s favorite color so you better believe these were a showstopper at Ellie’s Amazing Ice Cream Party!
Here’s all you’ll need: Milkshake glass, styrofoam ball, straws, taffy, red hard candies.
Cut the styrofoam ball in half. Using a hot glue gun, stick the foam ball to the milkshake glass.
Cut about an inch or two off the end of a straw. Poke a hole in the foam ball (I used a pen to do this). Add glue and secure straw into the hole. Add more glue around the outside of the straw if necessary. It helps to hold the straw upright for a minute or so while the glue dries and hardens.
Starting at the base of the straw, glue taffy wrappers to the styrofoam ball. Again it helps if you hold the candy in place for about 30 seconds or until the glue has a chance to firm up. Continue gluing taffy wrappers to the ball until it’s completely full. Just glue and glue and glue and glue! About half way through you’ll want to put on some Kelis for inspiration…..and before you know it……
My (taffy) milkshake brings all the boys to the yard! I could teach ya, but I have to charge! Just kidding!! It’s free! Add a red hard candy on top for the cherry and you’re done!! Not too shabby for a dollar store craft! And it doubles as a yummy treat! Wouldn’t this be such a cute gift idea to brighten someone’s day?!?
